KUALA LUMPUR CONVENTION CENTRE EDUCATES THE YOUNG THE IMPORTANCE OF CARING FOR MOTHER NATURE

Kids had their eyes glued to SeeFood,’ Malaysia’s first 3D animated film at the screening organised by the Centre to mark Earth Hour 2013

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 April 2013 – Earth Hour can be an engaging and fun educational platform for the younger generation and the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre)decided to spread the message of climate change to the young in a different way by providing a movie screening to promote environmental sustainability.

Championing the global Earth Hour for the fourth consecutive year, the Centre was committed to create greater awareness of environmental protection amongst team members and their children especially, through a local 3D animated film based on the same topic. More than 300 team members and their families turned up to show support for this initiative.

Speaking at the gathering, the Centre’s Deputy General Manager, Alan Pryor said the Centre’s participation in the annual Earth Hour is “very much part and parcel of our sustainability agenda to contribute towards enhancing awareness of and concern for global warming.

But, we wanted to do more than just switching off the lights this year. We wanted to educate the younger generation on our nature and environment. We also wanted to create an opportunity for team members and their family to spend some quality time together. And what better way than watching a movie together

The event ended at 8.30pm, when the Centre joined the global community in showing their support for the environment by switching off its facade lighting and non-essential lighting for one hour on Saturday, 23 March.

And in line with the Centre’s sustainability efforts, on Earth Hour day, five team members participated in the inaugural International Day of Forests which fell on 21 March and pledged the Centre’s continued support to tree-planting. This year, the Centre contributed an additional 50 trees in lieu of monies saved from speaker gifts and honourariums from its annual Association Seminar. Since 2010, the Centre has made the world greener with 240 trees planted at the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) under its yearly tree-planting programme.

Other on-going green initiatives practised by the Centre include a3R Campaign (reduce, re-use and recycle) to encourage staff and visitors to reduce wastage, re-use and recycle where possible; eco-friendly practices such as using biodegradable cleaning products, minimal use of pesticides, sourcing products from environmentally conscious suppliers and using locally-produced products for the culinary department.

The Centre also encourages delegates attending conferences and events to participate in the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau’s (MyCEB) ‘Let’s Meet & Green’ tree-planting programme.
