Israel Aerospace Industries to Supply Four Super Dvora Mk3 Fast Patrol Boat to an African Military Customer




IAI recently received a contract worth tens millions of dollars to supply four Super Dvora Mk3 Fast Patrol Boat to an African military customer. All four boats will be built at IAI Ramta's facilities in Israel and will be delivered during 2016. These newly ordered Super Dvoras are stated to be used for coastal defense, EEZ and HLS missions. The Super Dvora Mk3 is a combat proven boatthat is currently in service with several navies worldwide. 

Speaking on the occasion Mr Nitzan Shaked IAI/Ramta’s General Manager said,
"With an overall length of 27 meters a top speed in excess of 40 knots and equipped with a full suite of advanced weapons and sensors this powerful boat will be an important addition to our customer's maritime arsenal for securing its littoral waters" 

"We are very proud that our boatare being operated on nearly all of the world's oceans, and that this, another African customer, has selected our proven design to address their significant maritime challenges." He further added

To till date IAI has supplied more than 100 patrol boatsin various configurations via contracts valued at hundreds of millions of dollars to maritime customers around the world.

WHO gives emergency health kits funds to quake-hit Nepal



New Delhi, India, 26 April, 2015 - The World Health Organization this morning handed over four emergency health kits comprising of medicines and medical supplies and US dollars 175 000 as the first tranche of emergency health funds to meet the immediate health needs of the earthquake affected people in Nepal.

“Within hours of the tragedy, WHO disbursed medical supplies to cover the health needs of 40 000 people for three months. These supplies are in the form of inter-agency emergency health kits and were given to hospitals in Nepal treating the injured,” WHO South-East Asia Regional Director Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh said.

WHO also immediately made available US dollar 175,000 to the Ministry of Health and Population, Nepal, as the first tranche of South-East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund (SEARHEF). The SEARHEF funds are aimed at meeting immediate financial needs and to fill critical gaps in the aftermath of a disaster.

Simultaneously, WHO is supporting the Ministry of Health and Population, Nepal, to continue to assess the health needs of the affected people and the damage to health facilities. Senior officials from the WHO Regional office are in Kathmandu, to reinforce WHO Nepal Office’s support to the Government of Nepal.

Other than the injured, those rendered homeless by the earthquake and are in need of immediate support for regular public health services, water and sanitation and psycho social support to deal with the trauma caused by the tragedy.

The WHO emergency kits disbursed his morning include medicines, disposables and instruments. Each kit can meet the needs of 10 000 people for three months. Each kit has a basic and supplementary unit. The basic unit is intended for use by primary health care workers with limited training. It contains non-injectable drugs, medical supplies and some essential equipment accompanied by simple treatment guidelines. Basic equipment so has a complete sterilization set and items to help provide for clean water at the health facility. The supplementary unit contains drugs, renewable supplies and equipment needed by doctors working in first- or second-referral health facilities.

The kits to developed by WHO can also be used for initial supply of primary health care facilities where the normal system of provision has broken down.

Reiterating all possible support Dr Singh said WHO stands with the people and the Government of Nepal in this hour of crisis and would do everything to save lives.

WHO’s South-East Asia Region comprises the following 11 Member States viz Bangladesh, Bhutan, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Timor-Leste.

GKN Aerospace commences collaborative research to create additive material for aerospace

                         Operation of the EBM machine to produce a solid metal part from powder

UK, LONDON, 15th April, 2015 - GKN Aerospace is to lead a 3 year GBP 3.1m collaborative research programme to develop titanium powder specifically formulated and blended to meet the needs of additive manufacturing (AM) of aerospace components. The programme, called TiPOW (Titanium Powder for net-shape component manufacture) will also commence work developing the techniques and equipment that will produce the powder consistently, in quantity and at a lower price than today’s material.

The TiPOW programme is backed by the UK’s Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) and the country’s innovation agency, Innovate UK. Consortium partners include UK companies Phoenix Scientific Industries Ltd and Metalysis and the University of Leeds. As programme leader, GKN’s aerospace business will also draw on the expertise of the GKN Powder Metallurgy division a world-leading supplier of metal powders and precision engineered components.

Today additive manufacturing uses alloys and powders that have not been developed for these processes and so are not optimised for this environment. Together the partners will investigate developing titanium alloys and powders with the characteristics that are specifically suited to AM. They will then define the production methods that will produce AM-designed materials to ensure cost is minimised whilst production quality, quantity and consistency all meet the rigorous standards required by aerospace. The TiPOW programme will also explore effective re-use and recycling of titanium material, and a study of potential applications for the recycled material.

Russ Dunn, Senior Vice President Engineering & Technology stated that, “To date research into AM has focused largely on evolving the processes we will require to enter full scale production but if these processes are to make a significant breakthrough, the quality, repeatability and cost of the material we use will be critical. Working with our industrial and academic partners in the TiPOW programme and leveraging expertise from across GKN, we will begin the process of addressing this issue.”

“We believe AM has the potential to revolutionise the design and manufacture of aircraft, unlocking innovations in low drag, high-performance wing designs and lighter, even more efficient engine systems that will dramatically improve airframe performance and reduce noxious emissions and noise.” He added

The TiPOW programme forms one element in a major AM research and development initiative across GKN, and will run alongside another GKN Aerospace-led, ATI supported, programme called ‘Horizon (AM)’. This programme aims to take a number of promising AM techniques through to viable production processes. Five dedicated AM development centres have been established in North America and Europe each clearly focused on progressing specific additive processes and technologies.

Gary Elliott, CEO of the UK’s Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI pointed out that “The UK is already a world leader in aerospace technology and the Aerospace Technology Institute is delighted to be investing in this highly creative project. TIPOW will give us a better understanding and insight into improving airplane performance and will undoubtedly deliver more technological advances to the industry. This programme highlights the capabilities of the UK aerospace, promotes healthy competition and will lay the groundwork for even more innovation.”

Woman's brain tumor may have been her unborn twin



Indiana, USA 23 April, 2015 - A doctoral student who moved from India to Indiana to study computer science and was complaining of headaches and fatigue, shocked the medical community and herself when doctors discovered a brain tumor that contained bones, hair and teeth.

On her blog 26-year-old Yamini Karanam wrote that initially she thought she may be tired or that her school work was too difficult. When she went on a vacation, she wound up sleeping for two weeks straight, and soon after started suffering from headaches. After three months of testing, doctors determined she had a tumor, which by that point had left her mostly bedridden.
Though doctors had located a tumor in her brain’s pineal region, they determined that removal was risky and could cause irreversible damage to her brain. After six months of searching, Karanam found Dr. Hrayr Shaninian, a neurologist at the Skullbase Institute in Los Angeles, who agreed to perform the surgery.

Friends held a fund-raiser to fly her out to Los Angeles for the procedure, which occurred April 15. Through an incision in the back of her head, doctors used an endoscope to enter the area of her brain where the tumor was, The Washington Post reported. There instead of finding a tumor surgeons found a teratoma -- a mass of bone, hair and teeth.

Teratomas are embryonal tumors -- the most common brain tumors in infants less than 36 months old -- that are typically benign, but are defined as being composed either of tissues that are foreign to the area, or tissues that derive from all three of the germ layers. Germ layers contribute to the formation of all organs and tissues during embryonic development, according to The Embryo Project Encyclopedia. These masses can sometimes contain hair, teeth, bone neurons or even eyes.

"This is my second one, and I've probably taken out 7,000 or 8,000 brain tumors,” Shahinian told NBC 4.

Karanam referred to the tumor as her “evil twin sister who’s been torturing me for the past 26 years,” NBC 4 reported.

According to The Washington Post, it’s unclear whether the teratoma is Karanam’s twin, but it was killing her.

Shaninian said her tumor was not cancerous, and expects her to make a full recovery.- FoxNews. Com
